Human Behavior in the Shipping Industry – Getting Tired and Stressed

Crew: Learning and Developing
22. September 2015We are currently in the final stage of testing our new version of the CODieBOARD# supervision-center – the rollout to our customers will start soon. CB#sc Version 6 includes bug fixes, new enhancements, and new functions. Features have been added to these existing program sections:
- new building reporting from on-site shipyard site offices
- warranty claim handling,
- damage reporting and handling (including accounting to charterers),
- insurance claim management
While using the program, one of our oldest customers thought of an idea to expand the software with a completely new feature: Malfunction Reporting. In fact, today, malfunctions can be reported in a variety of ways. Usually, this is done within the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) of the vessel, like our CODie ISMAN. Many companies use separate Excel sheets on board or in the office – a very inconvenient method, considering the fact that information can only be changed and/or amended at one site at the same time.
However, even when using the PMS for malfunction reporting, not everyone involved in the operation of a vessel in a shipping company is frequently using the PMS. Therefore, information on recent malfunctions is often not available in time, meaning that the repair of the malfunctioning parts cannot be initiated, as it should be.
When using the CODieBOARD# supervision-center, the crew can also now directly report the malfunction to the Technical, Nautical and Operations departments. This means that everybody in the shipping company is aware that something happened on board, and the necessary measures can be taken and arranged for, in timely manner.
